Michelle has been practicing in the complementary health care field since 1997, including 17 years in Austin, Texas.

As the founder of The Cancer Wellness Center in Austin, Michelle also co-founded and co-owns Sage Acupuncture in Austin. Michelle has spent several years in integrated clinical settings, including Tulsi Holistic Living in Washington DC and the Carl Vogel Center – a multi-disciplinary HIV clinic. In 2005, she co-authored a study on acupuncture and pain management with HIV patients. In 2006, she participated in a peer review of “Chinese Medical Herbology and Pharmacology,” by the Art of Medicine Press.

Michelle received her Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine from the Academy of Oriental Medicine at Austin (now called AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine). She has since undergone advanced training/certification and practice in cancer care and in women’s health and fertility. She also holds a certification in occupational acupuncture, a practice which aims to help heal musculo-skeletal injury. Currently, Michelle is engaged in further studies in Classical Chinese Medicine at the American University of Complementary Medicine, with esteemed senior teacher and Daoist priest, Jeffery Yuen.

A passion for food and nutrition, rooted in a lifetime of study, led Michelle to complete training in “Food as Medicine” through the Center for Mind Body Medicine and Georgetown University Medical School. She is also certified by the American Association of Nutritional Consultants.

Michelle is a graduate of The Shiatsu Institute and Therapy Center in San Francisco, The Lauterstein-Conway School of Massage in Austin, and the Asian bodywork program at the Academy of Oriental Medicine at Austin, where she went on to assist in the Tuina department. Michelle is also a Reiki Master.

Michelle is licensed in Acupuncture by the Texas Board of Medical Examiners and holds Diplomate status in Oriental Medicine by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Further, she is a professional member of the Texas Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

She is a meditation guide and an active leader at the Austin Shambhala Meditation Center. Outside of the office, Michelle can also be found spending time with her family, exercising her body and mind, cooking, and playing the drums.

Laura offers acupuncture treatments combined with holistic health counseling to create individualized and focused care. With over 11 years of clinical practice and thousands of treatments given, Laura has an abundance of expertise and knowledge to offer. Laura is passionate about her work and  is committed to the highest standards of practice. She provides thorough and compassionate care, specific to each individual’s needs.

Laura has had several years of experience working with individuals diagnosed with cancer. She has had specific experience treating patients with breast cancer, cervical cancer, leukemia, and multiple myeloma, as well as several other types of cancers of the head and neck. Along with treating the patient’s underlying constitution, Laura also addresses the many unpleasant symptoms patients may experience during and after various cancer treatments. She has also had much success using acupuncture and herbs to treat  stress and mood issues (including anxiety, insomnia and depression).
Her goal is to offer the best of her training in acupuncture, Chinese herbs and nutritional health to help patients move toward their wellness goals and optimal health.  With a strong foundation in western sciences she understands western medical diagnoses and treatments, and works easily with other practitioners and treatments to obtain the best results for her patients health. She believes in an Integrative medicine model which treats the person on all levels – physical, emotional, behavioral, environmental & spiritual – and integrates a blend of proven healing techniques for each person. She works with her clients to create a partnership built on trust.

Michelle Gonzales is originally from El Paso, TX, and has been living in Austin for 19 years.  She earned her Masters Degree in Oriental Medicine from AOMA, The Graduate School of Integrative Medicine.  Michelle has over 15 years of medical experience. This includes medical assisting, healthcare management, and herbal pharmacy.  She began her journey studying western medicine and working as a medical assistant at Brackenridge hospital in a woman’s low income healthcare clinic. During her time at AOMA she incorporated her education and experience in treating women’s health and family care.  Michelle is a thoughtful, empathic, professional that strives in educating patients and creating long lasting relationships. She also earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from University of Texas at Austin, with a minor in Biology.  Michelle is bilingual in Spanish.

Michelle’s post graduate work includes training in Women’s health and fertility and Mei Zen, cosmetic acupuncture for facial and neck rejuvenation.  Although Michelle’s focus is on treating cancer and and women’s health; she also emphasizes the importance of Chinese Medicine and holistic healthcare to maintain and restore one’s general health.

Michelle enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and daughter, as well as their two dogs and four chickens.

Geri Ruane is a licensed massage therapist who has advanced training in various medical modalities, such as oncology massage, lymphatic/lymphedema, pediatric massage and pediatric oncology massage, geriatric, hospital and hospice/end-of-life care. 

Ruane received her initial training in massage therapy at the Lauterstein-Conway Massage School in Austin in 2007. In 2011, she completed her 18-month, 300-hour certification program in oncology massage from the Peregrine Institute of Oncology Massage Training in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In addition, she has more than 150 hours of hospital and hospice massage therapy training, working with patients, caregivers and medical staff.  All of these advanced medical massage trainings have enabled her to provide safe and effective comfort-oriented massage sessions for her clients.

Geri is also a certified lymphedema therapist (through Klose Training’s 135-hour Complete Decongestive Therapy program – the Vodder method) and has been taught the proper protocols for working with someone with lymphedema and for those at risk for lymphedema. Fifty percent of Ruane’s clientele from her private practice, Two Roads Massage Therapy, are people who have active cancer and/or cancer history along with men or women having lymphedema and/or are at risk for lymphedema.

To keep expanding her professional knowledge, Geri travels to many workshops and conferences, such as MD Anderson’s Annual Oncology Training Conference for Massage Therapists in Houston, Tx.; Breast Cancer Rehabilitation in Boulder, Co and San Antonio, Tx.; Mt. Sinai School of Medicine (Hospital Massage for the Seriously Ill Patient) in NYC, NY; Final Touch Training – Adapting Massage for End-of-Life, Dallas, Tx; Pediatric Massage/Pediatric Oncology Massage in the Clinical Setting in Long Beach, Ca.; the ESCAPE leadership conference for cancer advocates in Tucson, Az., and the Healwell’s Nine-Day Hospital Massage Training Stewardship Program in Arlington, Va.

The Oncology Massage Alliance (OMA) is a nonprofit organization that Geri and three other massage therapists started in Austin in 2011 by offering free hand and foot massages to cancer patients in the infusion/radiation rooms. Since then, OMA has grown to nearly 35 oncology-trained massage therapists in radiation and infusion centers in Dallas, Austin, Round Rock, New Braunfels, Houston and Medford, Oregon. In addition to being on the Board of Directors and serving as Director of Operations, Ruane volunteers weekly at various infusion centers.

Geri Ruane and husband Roy make their home in northwest Austin, where they are the proud parents of seven loving and spoiled cats.


Christine Wetzel, Meditation Instructor

Christine teaches free meditation instruction at The Cancer Wellness Center. Her background includes administrating, developing, and teaching meditation at the Austin Shambhala Meditation Center. There she has spent many years managing a diverse group of volunteers to maintain a formal practice and education environment. She is an authorized meditation instructor and teacher of Buddhist studies. Her passion lies in helping others learn to use meditation in their daily lives.
