Austin Colon Cancer Treatment
Safe and Natural
The practitioners at our Austin cancer wellness center know that colon cancer is far too common not only in our country, but around the world. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people get the devastating news that they have this disease. What are some of the most common colon cancer symptoms, what are your treatment options, what do the various stages mean? We provide help for cancer patients to not only give you hope, but help you thrive and improve the odds of beating colon cancer.
The latest cancer treatment often combines the best of Western medicine with “holistic” or natural medicine. Acupuncture, oncology massage, and other non-invasive treatments are extremely beneficial for those with colon cancer.
What are the colon cancer symptoms you should look for?
Some people have no symptoms at all, particularly in the early stages of the disease. Symptoms you may experience include:
Colon Cancer Symptoms
- Unexplained weight loss
- Blood in stool or rectal bleeding
- Diarrhea, constipation, or other changes in bowel habits
- Fatigue or weakness
- Abdominal cramps or pain
- Excess gas
- Changes in stool shape or color
- Feeling like your bowel does not completely empty
Many of these symptoms are similar to those with IBS, so see your doctor if you are concerned.
Colon cancer causes
There are several risk factors that play a role in the development of colon cancer, however you may be diagnosed with the disease even if you have no risk factors. Some of the things that may contribute to colon cancer include:
Diet. A lack of fiber in your diet, consuming too much processed or red meat, and eating a high-fat diet may increase the risk.
Age. Those over the age of 50 are at an increased risk of the disease.
Consuming too much alcohol.
Family history of colon cancer and those with diabetes are at a higher risk.
Obesity or being overweight may increase your risk.
IBS, colon polyps, and other chronic diseases related to the bowel.
Smoking, a sedentary lifestyle (lack of exercise), and abdominal radiation therapy for treatment of prior cancer may increase your risk as well.
Colon cancer stages
The earliest stage of colon cancer is stage 1, with the most advanced being stage 4. Cancer treatment options are often based on what stage you are diagnosed at, by your doctor.
Stage 1 is when the cancer has not spread to the colon walls but has invaded the mucosa (lining) of the rectum or colon.
Stage 2 is usually diagnosed when the cancer has not affected nearby tissues such as lymph nodes, but has spread to colon/rectum walls.
Stage 3 colon cancer occurs when the disease has spread to lymph nodes, but has not spread to any other organs or body parts.
Stage 4 is diagnosed when the cancer has invaded the lungs, liver, or other organs in the body.
By determining which stage you are at, your doctor can develop the best treatment plan for you.
Colon cancer treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy depending on whether your disease is in the early or more advanced stage. Targeted drug therapy and immunotherapy are other cancer treatment options depending on your unique circumstances. Our cancer support services help improve your overall physical and emotional well-being during what is potentially the most stressful and difficult time of your life.
Patients who undergo chemotherapy often experience extreme fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and other negative side effects. Chemotherapy also impacts your body’s immune system due to a reduction in white blood cell counts. Acupuncture for colon cancer is effective for boosting the immune system, relieving stress, alleviating nausea, enhancing blood flow, and helping your body release its own “feel good” hormones, endorphins. Acupuncture also relieves pain and facilitates healing after surgical procedures, helping you avoid potentially addictive opioids or other pain medications.
Oncology massage is another way we care for patients who have colon cancer. This type of massage aids in proper digestion, promotes better sleep, increases energy, regenerates emotional health, and even reduces scar tissue from surgical procedures by promoting new cell growth. It is a relaxing, calming way to heal throughout your journey.
